Tacos on trial around Philadelphia
Growing up in Mexico one of my favorite stories was “Juicio a un taco” (Trial of a taco) by Julieta Montelongo.
"In a dock facing an angry crowd sat a taco. It was an ordinary taco, meaning, delicious! Its corn skin emanated that characteristic aroma that delights any Mexican."
Last weekend I remembered this story as I went on a taco tour around Philadelphia, stopping at four local restaurants with menus that include a wide variety of this Mexican dish.
Now that I’ve had the opportunity to judge for myself, I can say how original, delicious and well made the tacos in Philadelphia can be.
According to Juan Carlos Romero, owner of Los Taquitos de Puebla, the secret for a good taco is the salsa. "The key has been to keep the tradition going. Mexican food is very popular all over the world. We offer the original and spicy salsas, and that is how people like them.”
On the other hand, for Dionicio Jimenez, chef at El Rey restaurant, said, "the key to a good taco is the love you put in it."
After having experienced such “taquiza,” the final verdict was in. In Philly you can find tacos for all kinds of foodies. From the more traditional recipes at the hands of Mexican chefs to original flavors that expand the tradition with innovation, you will find variety in our local cuisine.
